This past June, Erin McKown, Director of Athrú Training, presented at the NationaLease Human Resources Summit on the timely topic, "Supporting Managers Where It Counts: People Management Skills and the Value of EAP Partnership."
The session explored a challenge many organizations face today: managers are expected to lead teams, navigate employee concerns, support well-being, drive performance, and shape workplace culture, often while balancing significant responsibilities of their own. While technical expertise may prepare employees for leadership roles, successful people management requires skills that must be intentionally developed and supported.
Why Managers Matter More Than Ever
Managers have a direct impact on the employee experience. They are often the first point of contact when employees face workplace challenges, interpersonal conflicts, stress, burnout, performance concerns, or personal issues that affect work. As a result, the quality of manager interactions can significantly influence engagement, retention, productivity, and workplace culture.
During the presentation, Erin highlighted several key skills that help managers lead effectively:
Effective communication and active listening
• Conflict resolution and difficult conversations
• Performance coaching and feedback
• Emotional intelligence and empathy
• Recognizing signs of stress and burnout
• Building trust and psychological safety
When managers are equipped with these skills, they are better positioned to create environments where employees and teams can thrive.
The Value of Employee Assistance Program Partnerships
While manager training is essential, organizations also need resources that managers can leverage when employees require additional support. Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) play a critical role in providing that support.
Strong EAP partnerships give managers and employees access to professional resources that address a wide range of personal and workplace challenges, including mental health support, work-life balance resources, crisis intervention, and management consultation services.
The session explored how EAPs help managers:
• Navigate complex employee situations with confidence
• Access expert consultation and guidance
• Connect employees with appropriate support resources
• Reduce the burden on HR teams
• Strengthen employee well-being and resilience
• Foster healthier workplace cultures
Rather than expecting managers to have all the answers, EAP partnerships provide a trusted support network that helps organizations respond effectively to employee needs.
Helping HR Focus on Strategic Priorities
A key takeaway from the discussion was that investing in manager development and EAP resources benefits more than just managers and employees. It also enables HR professionals to focus more strategically.
When managers are better equipped to handle everyday people-related challenges and know when to leverage EAP resources, organizations create a stronger support system that addresses concerns earlier and more effectively. This allows HR teams to devote more time to talent development, employee engagement, organizational effectiveness, and long-term business goals.
